l. Your RECORD KEEPING IS CRITICAL! Keep good records, and records of everything.

2. You must assume you will do well in your business, and that you are going to be successful.

3. The Foundation of your business is a better filing system. Ask yourself, “What do I need?”

4. A ‘Day Minder’ or Planner – If it has all the times in increments, you can jot down everything that is scheduled: webinars, appointments with clients, prospects, or leads. Record telephone numbers next to the names of people you talk to.

5. Document everything you do per day in your planner. Block out times/ appointments for Chamber Meetings, Field Marketing, MeetUps, Luncheon or Dinners – Write who you are meeting, what you are doing, and where you are going (Who, What, Where, When, Why for the business connection).

6. On all receipts business related, write the purpose or who you met. Keep receipts organized by category, and by date.

7. Record keeping doesn’t have to be a $5,000 system, but it has to be a way that you can keep track of your expenditures.

8. Be timely. Have a routine where you promise yourself to make sure your files are in order at least once a month, if not bi-weekly, or weekly.

9. Do not re-create everything later, because you didn’t keep up; think preventative. Do not program a system for failure, by waiting until later. You either are a business, or you aren’t.

10. Plan on outsourcing your business books or papers to a trusted professional or individual upon due diligence, once you have reached your personal success quotient, so you can exercise the business freedom of a true entrepreneur. Remember you are ultimately responsible for your business, whether grand or small; therefore, keep accountability or audits of those who render you services.

These 10 items are action steps designed to assist you in your record keeping for your tax documentation as a business.

You’re on an exciting new venture; be pro-active and act for the vitality of your business as an entrepreneur planning your tax affairs.
